Why ManGuard?
Approach: We start with your existing systems, and define the shortest path to an optimized solution. No re-inventing the wheel!
Foundation: Our foundation was operations, not consulting or IT. We started in plant floor operations and continue to spend a percentage of our time there.
This keeps us connected with our "real" end users in a hands-on way, including being involved with the ever-increasing demands which are expected to be accomplished with ever-decreasing resources. Using technology to improve operational workflow may be one of only ways to compensate for this resource reduction spiral!
What We Do:
Solution Architecture Evaluations and Business Process Optimization Consulting around your existing solutions, or rapid prototyping of potential new solutions that would integrate into those systems. Rapid prototyping is built on a 4th generation generic base functionality system. One of our strengths is getting right to the "edge value" use cases that typically only surface with experience in the field (kits, multiple part numbers for the same chemical that change during the course of a reporting year, formulation changes mid-year for the same MSDS, etc.)
Provide Subject Matter Expertise for Project Teams: In our largest project, 2 of our key personnel (1 EHS, 1 technical) provided the outside subject matter expertise half time to a team that included 23 developers for 18 months for a large integrator in a project for Big 3 Automotive that came in on time and under budget for a corporate common system.
What We Offer:
Institutional Memory: We bring a experience across a wide range of different types of facilities. Vertical markets we have specialized in include Automotive, Aerospace, and Hazardous Waste TSDF's (Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities).
Areas of Specialization: Waste Management, Chemical Tracking, Regulatory Reporting (SARA 312, 313, Custom Title V VOC/HAP, Waste Biennial Reporting), EHS Process Workflow, Standardized/Structured Interfaces with Purchasing, MSDS, Waste, and Regulatory Tracking Systems.
Whether you manage Environmental Health & Safety activities for an enterprise or for a single facility, ManGuard may be able to help improve both the cost-effectiveness and the data quality of your current program.
Interesting Previous Projects
End-To-End Supplier Shipment On-Site to Waste Shipment Off-Site Barcode Chemical Inventory Tracking: From the gleam in the requisitioner's eye to shipment off-site discarded unused, integrated tracking of unique container id's for chemicals. Suppliers put the barcode labels on before shipping the chemicals on-site, then send in an electronic file that identifies the contents, container size, and other info, which is processed into the database for subsequent tracking. Business Case/Economic Benefit: This solution enabled an aerospace client to achieve mid-6 figure savings with a low-5 figure initial investment, and has been operational for almost a decade.
One-Touch Barcode Waste Packing of Discarded Unused Chemicals: Building on the Barcode Chemical Inventory Tracking (above), MSDS's are reviewed and assigned Waste Categories. When containers arrive at the waste accumulation area, they are scanned, the Waste Category is displayed as part of the info on a hand-held scanner, and they are then scanned into a container for that waste category. The packing list is printed directly from this scanning. Business Case/Economic Benefit: This solution reduced the time required for managing each individual container from approximately 10 minutes to less than one minute (from hand-writing a form and then manually revieiwing it to 3 keystokes for each container followed by 2 keystrokes for each group of similar containers). This also builds two error-proofing steps into the process.
Minimum Keystroke/Maximum Information Job-Specific and MSDS-Specific Chemical Safe Use Instructions: Minimum keystrokes to provide users with a "translated" MSDS--the Safe Use Instruction includes actual Spill Cleanup and Waste Disposal instructions, as well as the actual PPE to be used for this particular job. The tool used to do this enables tracking of what is the same across jobs and what is different, which facilitates more effective training. Business Case/Economic Benefit: This solution replaced an Excel-based system, reducing the number of keystrokes from approximately 30-60 per job to 1-15 (1 to copy an existing job, 15 to create a completely new category). This enabled an automotive assembly plant to reconfigure 1500 unique jobs twice a year in less than 2 weeks, previously a 2-4 month process. The reusability of the information gave them better information and compliance while at the same time reducing preparation time. Tablet PC's were utilized for data collection, eliminating a paper to electronic conversion process.
Stepwise Workflow for Monthly Title V VOC and HAP Processing: Stepwise workflow was developed to comply with the requirement for a monthly Mass Balance around VOC's and HAP's for an aerospace client. Processing includes data quality steps to resolve limitations in MSDS data that has been provided, as well as to identify missing or bad data and provide for obtaining better information. Business Case/Economic Benefit: The manual process took several hundred hours, obviously technically infeasible for monthly instead of annual processing; the electronic processing takes less than an hour for processing of Purchases information, and less than 40 hours for full inventory. The majority of this time is data cleanup of the scanning information, actual processing is less than 8 hours per inventory event (the process has "stopping points" for review and cleanup of each major processing step before proceeding to the next step).
Semi-Intelligent Waste Profile Creation: Key physical/regulatory characteristics (DOT Hazard Class, Waste Codes, Physical Form) are used to "match up" a waste stream to the general category of Waste to which it is best matched (Solvent, Flammable, Spent compared to Solvent, Flammable, Discarded Unused, compared to Solvent, Flammable, Toxic, Halogenated Aerosol, for example). This lets you build on the Institutional Knowledge you have accumulated about similar waste streams over time and matches the new Profile to those, instead of reviewing each waste stream "from scratch" with the corresponding potential to overlook key regulatory compliance requirements. Instead of needing to "know the answer" to type information into a TSDF profile database and having to type each section into the database independent of the other information, key information is entered (constituents, waste codes), which is used to generate information dependent on it (RQ information from Waste Codes and Constituents, for example) or to apply the information intelligently to other areas it is used (NOS constituents and order of display on DOT Shipping Name, for example). Business Case/Economic Benefit: For a TSDF that is a transfer facility, this mapped more than 20,000 profiles to fewer than 500 Waste master records (fewer than 100 "key" waste categories). For Generators, this solution reduces the potential for errors at individual facilities, and enables sharing of work and Institutional Knowledge across different generators for a company.
