I joke that the Tier II/2 report is for chemicals that could damage firefighters and emergency responders, and that the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) (SARA 313) report is if the chemical is a hazard to fish.

Oversimplifying, but should give you the general idea.

Because of the different objectives of the two reports, they have different lists of the chemicals subject to reporting requirements, different definitions of facilities that need to report, and different reporting formats/details/data.

The Tier II/2 report is due March 1 every year if your facility is subject to reporting, the TRI report is due July 1.

Registration fee for the EGLE training session of $25 covers all 3 sessions. I have attended these sessions in the past, they are excellent, and a great refresher (even if you’re not in Michigan, the requirements in other states will be generally similar).

Call to Action: Do you know if your facility is subject to Tier II/2 reporting requirements? If so, pull out last year’s documentation notebook and do a quick review.  If not, pull out last year’s documentation where you documented why you were not required to report.

Then you can compare it to the materials that will be presented in the next couple of weeks to help you optimize the value you and your company obtain from this (significant) effort
